The Greatest Rap Lines of All Time E-mail

The Greatest Rap Lines of All Time
A random, capricious list

Despite hip-hop being one of the most popular musical genres, it noticeably lacks defenders among the political intelligentsia. Conservatives clearly despise rap music, and even the liberals join them in parent-pleasing indictments of the social degeneration Luda and Em have wrought. Is the establishment is simply afraid of rap, or have they simply never had the pleasure of growing up with Tupac? Undeterred by this puritan opposition, PI unequivocally supports the existence, popularity, quality and artistic value of hip-hop music.

Hip-hop, in its brilliance, merges lyrical modernized poetry with beats inspired from nearly every genre of modern music. The rapper thus performs two distinct duties in his songs. First, his voice must function as a musical instrument. Rather than a melodic effect, as in traditional music, the voice acquires a rhythmic quality. It becomes part of the beat of the song.

Second, the words afford him creativity. Constrained within few (if any) constraints of poetry, beyond rhyming requirements, rappers creatively discuss and describe every aspect of society. The most talented rappers draw from the most seemingly obscure cultural and musical references and modify inflections and pronunciations to enhance the beat and/or lyrical value.

This is PI's subjective and inchoate list of the top rap lines of all time. The rhymes range from facetiously lascivious to brilliantly introspective. To better understand the music, one must understand its talents.

Obviously, the citation of well-worded and creatively phrased lines does not necessarily indicate support for the subject matter. Nor does it imply that we have knowledge of or identification with the hip-hop lifestyle, or that we condone any violence and/or sexual promiscuity suggested within the lyrics. This principle should be obvious to anyone who appreciates "Imagine" and yet isn't a hippie socialist.

That being said, we enthusiastically support the social value of rap. We have no patience for the present-day Maoists who attempt to legislate their atavistic preferences for a utopian society. Art forms do not need innocuous subject matter to be regarded as art forms. As such, we recognize hip-hop for what it is - and celebrate it in turn.

Blackalicious - A to G

[Sampled woman's voice] We're going to learn to hear words with vowel "A" sound....Listen with care

I be the analog arsonist, aimin at your arteries
All-seeing abstract, analyze everything
Adding on, absolutely abolishing
Average amateurs' arsenal - just astonishing

[Sampled woman's voice] Next, we'll learn words that begin with letter "B"

I be the big, bad body rockin Bombay to boulevard bully back
Better bring a bomb to the battlefield
Bloody black beats bringing bottoms that boom
Basically build barriers bewildering buffoons

[Sampled woman's voice] Listen now to words that begin with letter "C"

Crazy character, constantly creating conconctions
Catalyst, a cannabalistic rhymes conqueror
Correctly connecting, craniums crumble down
Consistent capacity

[Sampled woman's voice] Next we'll hear words that start with letter "D"

Done did that done did this diddle don
Domination don't dignify diction
Doin' it deep down dialect daring
Doomsday dut devastate during the duration

[Sampled woman's voice] Listen to our song for vowel "E"

Extraterrestrial electrical, effortless
Eons of energy, everyone affected
Efficiently epitomize excellent
Extravagant elevate where the essence is

Blueprint - Final Frontier (RJD2)
Soul positionin'
Sole possession of poll position
Hold your breath and listen
While I resurrect these twenty-six letters
A lesson to beginners that tend to pale in comparison
You're not ill
And if you are, my notepad's full of medicine
Plus my freestyle is Excedrin
Take two hours and call me back with a new style
And show me you're prepared for the final frontier

Chali 2na - Full Contact (Swollen Members)
Rattle in your collapsed ear
Settin' traps here
Kickin' raps clear
Hop in your lap, dear
Yeah, verbal pap smear
...
I control your laughter
A voice more powerful than your pastor
Rappin' sweeter than three liters of Shasta

Common - The Light
I never knew a love like this
Gotta be somethin', for me to write this
Queen, I ain't seen you in a minute
Wrote this letter, and finally decide to send it
Signed, sealed, delivered for us to grow together
Love has no limit, let's spend it slow forever
I know your heart is weathered by what studs did to you
I ain't gon' assault em, 'cause I probably did it too
Because of you, feelings I handle with care
Some niggaz recognize the light, but they can't handle the glare
You know I ain't the type to walk around with matchin' shirts
If relationship is effort, I will match your work
I wanna be the one to make you happiest, it hurts you the most
They say the end is near, it's important that we close to the Most High
Regardless of what happens, on Him let's rely
...
It's important we communicate
and tune the fate of this union to the right pitch
I never call you my bitch or even my boo
There's so much in a name and so much more in you
Few understand the union of woman and man
And sex and a tingle is where they assume that it land
But that's fly by night for you and the sky I write
For in these cold Chi night's moon, you my light
If Heaven had a height, you would be that tall
Ghetto to coffee shop, through you I see that all
Let's stick to understandin' and we won't fall
For better or worse times, I hope to me you call
So I pray everyday more than anything
Friends we'll stay as we begin to lay
This foundation for a family; love ain't simple
Why can't it be anything worth having you work at annually?
Granted we known each other for some time
It don't take a whole day to recognize sunshine
...
My heart's dictionary defines you, it's love and happiness
Truthfully it's hard tryin' to practice abstinence
The time we committed love it was real good
Had to be for me to arrive and it still feel good
I know the sex ain't gon' keep you
But as my equal, it's how I must treat you
As my reflection in light, I'ma lead you
And whatever's right, I'ma feed you
I'll tell you the rest when I see you, peace

Common - Get 'Em High (Kanye West)
Real rappers is hard to find like a remote control
But rap is not a used-to
Still got love, that's why I abuse you who are not thugs
How could I ever let your words affect me?
They say Hip-Hop is dead
I'm here to resurrect me

Dilated Peoples - The Main Event

[Evidence]
You better step up, you lookin kinda lost
Claimin' two ghetto streets that don't even cross
If you didn't know, I'm a true artist
Who drops gems like on the run from police

Eminem - Renegade (Jay-Z)
Since I'm in a position to talk to these kids and they listen
I ain't no politician, but I'll kick it with 'em a minute
'Cause see they call me a menace, and if the shoe fits I'll wear it
But if it don't, then y'all swallow the truth, grin and bear it
Now who's these king of these rude, ludicrous, lucrative lyrics?
Who could inherit the title, put the youth in hysterics?
Usin' his music to steer it, sharin' his views and his merits
But there's a huge interference
They're sayin' you shouldn't hear it
Maybe it's hatred I spew, maybe it's food for the spirit
Maybe it's beautiful music I made for you to just cherish

Jagged Edge - Where The Party At (Feat Nelly)

This lil Jag and Benz
With the rose
Not the one with the stem
The one with the rims
The one that seems to make more enemies than friends

Jay-Z - 30 Something
I know every thing you wanna do
I did all that by the age of twenty-one
By twenty-two, I had that brand new Ac' coupe
I guess you could say that my Legend had just begun
I'm young enough to know the right car to buy
Yet grown enough not to put rims on it
I got that six deuce with curtains, so you can't see me
And I didn't even have to put tints on it
I don't got the bright watch, I got the right watch
I don't buy out the bar, I bought the night spot
I got the right stock
I got stockbrokers that's movin' it like white tops

Mos Def - Close Edge

Your grind and my grind 'aint the same, dawg
I'm the catalogue, you're the same song

Mos Def - Re: Definition (feat. Talib Kweli)
Lyrically handsome, come collect the King's ransom
Jams I write soon become the ghetto anthem
Way out like Bruce Wayne's mansion, I move like a phantom
You'll talk about me to your grandsons

Mos Def - Sunshine

I don't hate players, I don't love the game
I'm the shot clock, way above the game

Nas - N.Y. State of Mind

Inhale deep like the words of my breath
I never sleep, 'cause sleep is the cousin of death

Notorious B.I.G. - Hypnotize
Close like Starsky and Hutch, stick the clutch
Dare I squeeze three at your cherry M3?

Goodie Mob, Still Standing

Verse Four: Cee-Lo

Yeah..
Each and every element that exists in this
universe is manifested from a thought first
Through the inner mind's eye of the unseen power in the sky
Gave birth to Mother Earth and all it's worth to you and I
His most loved invention, my conciousness is an extension of Him,
yet I'm flesh and bone with a mind of my own
To dig deeper than the surface, whether I learn
from your upcomings or your downfalls we all have individual purpose
It's amazing, how the streets do the majority of raising
of children who end up dead before hearing what You said
And it's sad, so all I can write about is what I had
Interpretations of life good and bad with a pen and pad
It seems like abortion, when I just write a small portion
It's either crumpled up or torn without lettin the thought be born
Young minded, and blinded in those days;
I didn't want to have a thought that I couldn't raise, nurture, and care for
Be there for, help prepare for, the times ahead
When someone doesn't agree with what is said, huh
And if they did, don't get all arrogant cause that's my kid
Just be thankful that it's good and somebody overstood
Now, the listener in here want the same flow but I gotta let it grow
Clever enough to let it go, if I don't wanna rap no mo'
And I'll make sure that no one ever forgets
It's immortalized forever, on wax CD's and casettes
And when someone goes to the store and purchases it for ten
The life cycle starts all over again
And I was granted this music as my soulmate, to procreate
and give back what I was given, a life worth livin
And I, am Still Standing, unscathed
Pain is for suckers to feel
MC's are running out of things to say, and
radio stations running out of songs to play, s**t!
We Still Standing, unscathed
And pain is for suckers to feel, huh
And MC's running out of things to say...

Where is 2Pac on this list. Are you guys just dumb? At this point, that's a legitimate question. Where is Rakim?
Whatever... "f**k the world, pain was a part of the game. If you was a balla than money went as quick as it came." 2Pac - "God Bless The Dead"

Ambishn - "Class is in session"

It’s been a long time since I’ve been convinced of the element

It’s evident these sucka’s fake and speak like the president

Acting dominant while the grammar disappoints the whole continent

As the accidents continue to get brushed under the rug like the government

So I bring more funk than George and the parliament

Pssshhhh… Listen!

I was born then sworn to be a hip-hop lyricist

With acrobatic rhymes that flip like an Olympic gold medallist

I get a standing ovation from the entire audience

Plus I score a ten from all six panelists

Journalists like to call me too explicit…

So quick to say that my mind is sick and twisted

That’s the s**t! I get from damn near every editor

Cause I demolish all competitors like if I was the stalkin predator

While you stand there obliviously shocked in enigma

Cause I leave verbal lashes on your body like a supernatural stigma

It’s funny how a kid after a few gigs can portray like he’s already famous…

But the truth is acting like an idiot will only keep you remaining nameless.

Yea,….

Ice Cube? Hello? With NWA?

The motherfuccin' world is a ghetto, full of magazines, full clips, and heavy metal, when the smoke settle, I'm just lookin' for a big yellow, in six inch stilettos

Some of you won't get it, but it's real...

Peace

This is how I represent,
I rock the mic one-hundred-ten percent,
It's intimate,
I keeps the party movin' like an immigrant,
Binary star, super star, it's no coincidence,
Every verse is intricate, this ain't no circus in a tent,
We don't get down like them clowns in the tents,
I'm used to be indigent,
Who said it's all about the benjamins?
I want a fortune, I wanna make music and hit the lottery,
Fortunately my music is never watery,
That's how it's gotta be as far as I can see,
Maybe you should grab a telescope to see our view is like astronomy,
It ain't all about economy,
So the fact that all these whack MC's is makin G's don't bother me,
Honestly,
My number one policy is quality,
Never sell my soul is my philosophy,
High velocity,
Lyrics like Nostradamus makin' prophecy,
I told you cats a long time ago it ain't no stoppin' me,
I bomb yo set that's not a threat, that's a promise,
Got everybody ridin' on my wagon like the amish,
But still I never claim to be a big rap star,
'Cause no matter who you are,
It's still Allah who act god,
Better believe this,
Most rappers can't achieve this,
I'm bad to the bone but x-rays can't even see this,
See I'm strategic,
I let ya money talk bulls**t,
Walk while we keep it rollin' like paraplegics,
Whoever's on the microphone, let it be known,
You in danger,
I got next (necks) like the Boston Strangler,
You ain't never heard an emcee speak like this,
And Rodney King, ain't ever felt a beat like this

blackstar- RE: Definition (Mos Def)

What, lyrically handsome, call collect a kings ransom
Jams I write soon become the ghetto anthem
Way out like bruce waynes mansion, move like a phantom
Youll talk about me to your grandsons
Cats who claimin they hard be mad f*g
So I run through em like, flood water through sandbags
Competition is mad, what I got, they cant have
Sinkin they ship, like moby dick, did ahab
Son Im way past the minimum, its a verb millenium
My raps the holy gas in your bag, like palestinians
Ancient abyssinia, sure to hold the gideon
Official b-boy gentlemen, long term, never the interim
Born inside the winter wind, day after december 10
These simpletons they mentionin the synonym for feminine
Sweeter than some cinnamon from danish rings by entenmanns
Rush up on adrenaline, they get they asses sent to them
(gentlemen) you got a tenement, well then assemble it!
Leave your unit tremblin like herds of movin elephant
Intelligent embellishment, follow for your element
From flatbush settlement, kid posseses melanin
Hotter than tales of crack peddlin, makin em woop
Like blue gelatin, swing like duke ellington
Broader than barrington levy, believe me
The hot oppresion rent who burn down your chief teepee
You see me?

Word up son, word..
Yeah, to all the killers and the hundred dollar billers
For real, niggas who ain't got no feelings
Check it out now

[Prodigy]
I got you stuck off the realness
We be the infamous, you heard of us
Official Queens bridge murderers
The Mobb comes equipped with warfare
Beware of my crime family,
Who got 'nuff shots to share
For all of those who wanna profile and pose
Rock you in your face,
Stab your brain with your nosebone
You're all alone in these streets, cousin
Every man for theirself in this land we be gunnin'
And keep them shook crews runnin',
Like they supposed to
They come around but they never come close to
I can see it inside your face
You're in the wrong place
Cowards like you just get they're whole body laced up
With bullet holes and such
Speak the wrong words man and you will get touched
You can put your whole army against my team and
I guarantee you it'll be your very last time breathin'
Your simple words just don't move me
You're minor, we're major
You all up in the game and don't deserve to be a playa
Don't make me have to call your name out
Your crew is featherweight
My gunshots'll make you levitate
I'm only nineteen but my mind is older
And when the things get for real,
My warm heart turns cold
Another nigga deceased, another story gets told
It ain't nuttin' really, ay yo dun, f**k the Philly
So I can get my mind off these yellow backed niggas
Why they still alive? I don't know, go figure
Meanwhile back in Queens the realness is foundation
If I die, I couldn't choose a better location
When the slugs penetrate, you feel a burning sensation
Getting closer to God,

As devils search for the secrets to immortality
I alter my physical chemistry
Walk through the valley of the shadow of death
I exist even when no things are left
Vibrations transcend space and time
Pure at heart because I deal with the mind
That's why I compose these verses
Audible worlds, my thoughts are now universes
Written on these pages is the ageless
wisdom of the sages, ignorance is contagious
So I hope you keep your focus
There's no hocus-pocus, in the end, it's just us
Devil got brother killin brother, it's insane
Goin out like Abel and Cain
Wisen up and use your brain
There'll be no limit, to the things that you can gain
In positivity, balance it with negativity
Until then, ain't the devil happy

[Verse Two:]

I hate when the devil's happy, so I wear my hair hair nappy
Knotty, won't go out like John Gotti
He came from the caves to destroy everybody
And we like fools destroy our own bodies
Too many niggaz chillin, bad boys boom boom
This leaves no room for the flowers to bloom
Seeds blow in the wind, another drug killing
What, are we accomplishing? Nothing
What's, the matter?
Why everytime I look around another brain gets splattered?
Some pockets get fatter but it don't matter
The devil's the only one who really gets fatter
Lead ruptures flesh, spleens are shattered
Dreams are shattered, another Queen without a King
What will out children become without proper guidance?
Probably nothing, so ain't the devil happy

[Verse Three:]

Niggaz are in a state of nothingness
Hopelessness, lifelessness
If you're in range I hope you hear this
And try to change this, cause it's disatrous
Who gets the most loot, who gets bust?
Dollar bill y'all, is the god we trust
THe days blow by like dust
Even Men of Steel rust
We're out here acting ridiculous
When, only we can save us
Mentally enslave us, for little or nothing kill our neighbors
Animalistic, caniballistic, behavior
Look to the sky for your savior
He won't save ya, he didn't save your forefathers
Why bother, brothers? You must discover
The power of self, know thyself, or find thyself
Hating thyself, killing thyself
While he collects the wealth that you sit back and murder for
Ain't the devil happy
